The Art of the Selfie….

The Art of the Selfie….

Why this blog you ask?

Well a good friend of mine loves photography but finds it difficult to get an appealing picture of herself. Part of the issue is that she has developed a dislike of taking pictures of herself as they never come out right.

I thought I’d help out and give her some tips and techniques to guide her through the #Selfie process.

I do love a good selfie as it is a way to show different side of your personality the playful and creative.

Tip 1 Keep it bright!!

For the perfect selfie you need the best light whether it is natural daylight or artificial. Great light blows out imperfections on the face and gives you a nice glow.

I always find that lighting is best with either spot lights, the bathroom for natural light, or by a window… that’s if its indoors

Tip 2 Background Symphony

Yes I said it….. Noisy walls distract from the important part of the image YOU the subject. Try to avoid loud walls or multi-coloured backgrounds (unless intentional for creative reasons) Go for plain walls that contrast well with your skin tone and clothing. You want to stand out…go ahead!

Tip 3 Angle me right!

This is a key one. Most selfies are always taken from a slight angle, and height. Front facing images tend to be unflattering for a lot of people so avoid like the plague. Pick your best side (come on everybody has one) and exploit it.

Mix it up and be creative!!

Try out a few sample shots to see what works for your personal tastes.

Tip 4 The infamous Trout Pout

This is not my personal favourite, but some people can pull it off. You press your lips together as if your about to blow an air kiss to the world.

If you want to do something just as fun and appealing, try some where you smile, pull a silly face, give the attitude look or take it high and do some ‘ Madonna’ Vogue poses. Your face is the best art display in the world use it!

Tip 5 The Magical Crop

Simple if you don’t like what’s in your picture, crop it out. Not everyone has the supermodel look and some of those bits to cuddle and love can get on your nerves. Hey, this is your selfie take control, only show the parts you want.

Do a head shot and crop out the arms and hands or be creative and do a selfie of another body part it’s still you….

Tip 6 Cheese it out!

It’s not really a tip but #seflies are essentially about having fun with the camera. Showing off your sex appeal, style or taste. There is nowrong way to take a picture, it’s all down to personal preference. Go, try it now and send out some selfies….. I might update my instagram with a few, just talking about it has made me want to try some ideas.

So there you have it the SoulChild guide to taking a selfie. Test it out and show me what you’ve learned. I have posted some famous selfies that I love below…..

Thank you for this 😊 though the kate+William selfie surely is a Photoshop? 😉

      Hi Uschi,

It may well be a Photoshop, however it was just an example from the interweb. The Ellen DeGeneres Image is my favourite.
